Getting Your Beginner's Permit in South Carolina

Before you can start learning to drive, you'll need to obtain your beginner's permit from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. This permit allows you to practice driving under supervision while preparing for your road test.

Age Requirements

Regular Permit (Class D)

Must be at least 15 years old

Motorcycle Permit (Class M)

Must be at least 15 years old

Class E or F Permits

Must be at least 18 years old

Required Documents

You must bring the following documents to your SCDMV appointment:

  • Government-issued birth certificate (original)
  • Proof of current physical address (one proof for standard, two for REAL ID)
  • Social Security number
  • Picture ID from authorizing adult (if under 18)

Required at SCDMV branch before 4 p.m.

Knowledge Test

Must be completed at SCDMV branch before 4 p.m.

Permit Restrictions

Regular Permit (Class D)

  • 6 a.m. to Midnight: Practice driving with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and has at least one year of driving experience
  • Midnight to 6 a.m.: Driving requires supervision by someone listed on consent forms

Motorcycle Permit (Class M)

  • 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (8 p.m. during daylight savings): Solo riding permitted
  • Other times: Requires supervision from an experienced, licensed motorcyclist 21 years or older

Must hold permit for 180 days minimum before taking road test

Must hold permit for 30 days minimum before taking road test
