About the SC DMV Knowledge (Permit) Test
The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Knowledge (Permit) test is administered by a certified instructor at aLord Ashley Driving School. South Carolina requires a beginner permit for anyone who has never had a driver's license.
Prepare for Success
To best prepare for the knowledge (permit) test we recommend:

- ✓ Taking the classroom portion of the beginner course - not specifically toward the permit test.
Requirements
- • You must be at least 15 years old
- • You must pass the vision and knowledge test (permit test)
- • An appointment is required
- • Included in the Beginner's Courses
Required Documentation
aLord Ashley Driving School administers the knowledge (permit) test by appointment only. You will need to bring the following documents for the application:
- • Original birth certificate
- • Original social security card
- • 2 proofs of residency
Per SC DMV Regulations
A parent or legal guardian MUST sign required paperwork for all students under age 18.
Testing Location
Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for the test review.
